Tanning FAQ
What are your store hours?
Max Tan is open from 8am - 10pm (M-F), and 10am - 6pm (S-S)
We do close early on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, and are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's day. Don't worry... we'll give you plenty of notice in the store prior to being closed.
I've got a coupon or special offer. What do I need to do?
- Our coupons/specials are for local residents who are 18 years and older - so please bring your ID and your printed special offer.
- We do limit our introductory specials to one per person per year.
Do I have to make an appointment for a tanning session?
Not at all! Just come on in and we'll get you in the bed of your choice... in a flash!
May I tan at any Max Tan?
Absolutely! Auto-bill (EFT) members have access to all Max Tan locations.
Do I have to wait 24-hours between tanning sessions at Max Tan?
- Yes. Texas State Law prohibits anyone from tanning more than once within 24 Hours. We have both legal and software restrictions that will not allow us to tan you again until at least 24 Hours from the last time you tanned. Unfortunately, this is not something that we have control over.
- Please remember that this law applies to UV beds only, and not a Mystic tan.
Why does my tan fade?
Cells in the epidermis are constantly reproducing and pushing older cells upward toward the surface of your skin, where they are sloughed off in about one month. As your skin replaces its cells, the cells laden with melanin are removed. So the tanning process must continue with the new cells.
Why is indoor tanning better than tanning outdoors?
- Speed - It doesn't take all day to get a tan indoors. Depending on your skin type, just a few minutes, not hours, can give you the color you desire. In many cases, you can maintain your tan with as little as 60 minutes of exposure per month.
- Control - Our technologically advance equipment allows us to monitor and control your ultraviolet UV-A and UV-B exposure. This allows us to make sure you achieve beautiful color without ever burning.
- Climate - Our tanning rooms are climate-controlled and comfortable yearound. You can achieve a bronze glow without ever having to worry about rain, temperature, or humidity levels.
Can I tan if I have a tattoo?
Absolutely! Make sure to cover the tattoo with an SPF product. We carry products that are easy to apply and will keep your tattoo looking great.
I'm confused... I used to hear that tanning is bad for you, but now I hear that it can really be a good thing. Which is true?
For the most up-to-date information on tanning, go to www.tanningtruth.com. Don't forget... UV-free folks want to look great, too. That's why we offer the best in UV-free alternatives at each of our locations.
Can someone be too young to tan?
- Persons under 18 years of age must have a parent/guardian sign a consent form.
- Persons under 16 1/2 years of age may not tan.
Do I really have to wear approved eye protection/goggles?
Yes. State and Federal Law both require that you wear proper protective eyewear when tanning. Please understand that your eye lids are too thin to block out the UV rays. Putting a towel on your face or closing your eyes will not give you the protection that is required.
Could I take my child with me in a tanning room if there was no other alternative?
Under State & Federal Law, you may not have any other person in the room with you when you are tanning. This includes children. We are required to enforce these laws.
Programs
Do I need a checking account or credit/debit card to purchase a membership at Max Tan?
- You will need a checking account, credit/debit card to enroll on one of our auto-bill (EFT) programs, but we also offer "Max Packs" which do not require checking account, or credit/debit information.
- Our "Max Packs" can be purchased in week, month, 6-month, or 12-month increments.
- Unlike EFT programs, "Max Packs" cannot be cancelled or frozen. Please ask a Max Tan consultant to help you determine the right length of program to purchase.
I have a friend or family member that will be paying for my membership. Do they have to come in as well?
Yes. The person being charged for tanning services or products must be present to give their initial authorization. Once they have given their initial authorization for the monthly membership charges, they will not be required to visit us again.
Can I share my membership with a friend or family member?
No. Due to State & Federal Laws, only one person is allowed to tan on an account at a time so that the dates & times of each tan by that specific person may be registered as required by law.
Can I be refunded for a month in which I was billed but did not tan?
- When you are on an auto-bill (EFT) membership, you are responsible to pay your dues each month whether or not you choose to use the service - therefore we do not provide a refund if you choose not to use the service.
- "Max Packs" are purchased in exchange for tanning privileges through a specific expiration date. It is your responsibility to use your membership before it expires. If you are on an auto-bill (EFT) program and would like to take some time off - FREEZE your program. You can freeze an auto-bill (EFT) program for free up to 4 months, and during that time you will not be billed for the service.
What if I don't want to cancel my program, but I would like to take some time away from tanning?
If you are on an EFT program and would like to take some time off - FREEZE your program. You can freeze an EFT program for free up to 4 months, and during that time you will not be billed for the service.
How can I update my checking or credit card information if I need to change the account or card on which I'm billed?

You will need to pay your monthly payment in the store if you come in after the 10th of the month. Your new billing information will be used on the following month's billing cycle.
What is the cut off day for making any changes to my account's billing information or to freeze/cancel my account?
The cut off date at Max Tan is the 10th of every month. All requests to change billing information, freeze, or cancel received by the 10th will take effect on the 20th (that's the day our EFT customers are billed). For example, if you freeze on November 10th... your account will go into freeze mode on November 20th. All requests to change billing information freeze, or cancel received after the 10th of the month will go into effect on the 20th of the next month. For example, if you freeze on November 11th... your account will go into freeze mode on December 20th.
Can I make in-store payments even though I'm on an auto-bill (EFT) program?
- Absolutely! You can make in-store payments on or before the 10th of each month to keep from being billed via your checking account or credit/debit card.
- In-store payments made after the 10th of the month will be applied to the next month's billing cycle.

Mystic Tanning
Will the Mystic Tan turn me orange?
- No! Don't believe everything you see on TV and in the movies.
- We offer options for using the Mystic tan and its 6 levels of color. Please see your local store for more details and information on how to get your very best Mystic Tan!
Will my color streak if I use the Mystic?
- Not likely. However, if anyone does streak from the Mystic it is usually do to one of the following:
- The skin may have been too dry. The Mystic Tan is designed to spray you evenly, but the solution is attracted to and will absorb more into dry areas. For best results, exfoliate and moisturize before you use the Mystic Tan. This will help even the skin tone and best prepare your skin for the Mystic process.
- You may have used a product that contains oil prior to using the Mystic. When you moisturize with certain oils, there will be patches of your skin that are oilier than others, and the oils will prohibit that area of skin from absorbing the Mystic solution correctly.
- You may not have dried your skin completely after your session. Be sure to dry off completely, as if you were getting out of the shower to remove all excess solution from your skin.
- Be careful when applying the barrier cream so not to get the cream on an area you did not intend to. This unwanted cream will not let the Mystic solution tan you in that area.
I've heard that mixing a Mystic session and a UV session really looks good. Is that true?
- It looks great! The color blends perfectly for most people.
- The "Mystic Mix", as we call it, consists of tanning in a UV bed for a minimum of 5 minutes, and then using the Mystic booth immediately thereafter.
Lotions
I've heard that you cannot use outdoor tanning lotions in a tanning bed. Is this true? Why?
It is true. Many of the ingredients in an outdoor lotion can harm the acrylics in our beds. Indoor tanning lotions are specially formulated to maximize your tanning sessions while being indoor safe to our equipment.
What if I don't like my lotion? Can I exchange it or get a refund?
We do not offer any refunds or exchanges on products. However, we do offer lotion packets that you may purchase to see if you like the lotion before you purchase a full bottle.
How do I know which lotion is right for me?
Max Tan uses a unique, interactive computer program that matches you with a lotion that will give you fantastic results at any level or stage of tanning.
